Sapphire Valley, from above the cottage
Waterfalls and hiking are the big draw, from Silver Run Falls about eight minutes away to Whitewater Falls and Gorges State Park. Cashiers and Highlands have shops, restaurants, and coffee. See our guide to the area.
Every season has something. Spring brings rhododendron and mountain laurel, summer is cooler than the valleys below, fall color fills the plateau in October, and winter is quiet, with skiing nearby at Sapphire Valley. Many local shops and restaurants keep seasonal hours, so it's worth calling ahead.
The Cashiers Farmers Market on Highway 64 is good for local produce and picnic supplies, and Mountain Fresh Grocery in Highlands is an easy place to stock the kitchen for the week.
